OPLONTIS

Oplontis è vicina agli scavi di Pompei; il suo nome è la derivazione antica dell’attuale  Torre Annunziata   e i suoi scavi archeologici si trovano al centro della città. OPLONTIS in English

Oplontis, now called Torre Annunziata, was the “summer residence of the noblemen who lived in Pompei and it’s one of the towns destroyed by the Vesuvio in 79 a.C. The monument we are going to visit is “Villa Poppaea” (its name derives from the owner, Poppea, Nerone’s second wife) built around the I century b.C. At the time of the eruption it was empty because of the many earthquakes of the previous days. Today we can only visit the eastern part, which was the centre of the daily actions, because the western part is unavailable for visit. Since 1997 it has been defined by the UNESCO a World Heritage site and thanks to the paintings and the architectural principals, it’s one of the most important Roman buildings in the world.
